Acetaminophen and Motrin dosing

Remember these important considerations in dosing any medication to an infant or child.

1)    Children are dosed according to weight and age.

  1. Note dosage forms. For example, Ibuprofen Infant’s concentrated drops are more concentrated than the Children’s Oral Suspension (see below).
  2. Always use the calibrated syringe, dropper or cup that came with the medication. Your kitchen teaspoon can vary a significant amount from the appropriate dose.
  3. Do not mix medications in a bottle of milk or formula as this may not be fully consumed.
  4. Be careful how you refer to medication. Calling it “candy” might lead to a child ingesting it later think it really is candy.

For more thoughts on medications and young children see the FDA advisory concerning  use of cough/cold meds in children<2 years old (
